Tuesday evening, Salisbury Town Council briefed candidates for the two provincial ridings that overlap with the Town of Salisbury boundaries on the municipality’s priorities for the 2024 Provincial Election, scheduled to take place October 21.
During the session, the Town highlighted three priority files, as determined by Salisbury Town Council, being:
1. Advocacy for federal-provincial funding for a municipal water source;
2. Advocacy for an expedited replacement of the P380 bridge in the upcoming provincial capital budget, in-lieu of the 2027-2028 budget;
3. Advocacy for provincial-federal funding for a recreation facility, following the Town’s feasibility study this year.
While provincial priorities can be endless, the Town highlighted three long-term priorities in accordance to the Town’s Strategic Plan. Further to this, the Town briefed candidates on ongoing files with provincial relevance, the need for ongoing movement on confirmed provincial projects (such as the replacement of Salisbury Elementary School and the WM-32 Culvert (Main St. between Parkin and Larsen)), and the need for increased infrastructure investments, especially in former Local Service Districts (LSDs).
Like all municipalities, the Town of Salisbury is joining the Union of the Municipalities of New Brunswick (UMNB) in calling for an updated model to finance municipalities, since this commitment as part of Local Governance Reform has not yet been completed. These priorities can be found online in a recent report published by UMNB.
Following the session, the Town published the one-pager provided to candidates. It can be accessed online here.
Residents are encouraged to get informed on political platforms as we approach the upcoming election. Information on the election can be found on Election New Brunswick’s website here: https://www.electionsnb.ca/content/enb/en.html.
