As residents may have noticed, construction officially broke ground this summer on the future Salisbury Fire Rescue Station to be located on Main Street in Salisbury with noticeable progress in recent weeks.
During a Special Council Meeting on May 27, Town Council awarded the contract to Maxim Construction after having received five compliant bids following the public procurement process earlier this year. The 12,000+ square foot (footprint area) facility will reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by over 40% compared to standard construction methods. It will be ICF-constructed, have a geo-thermal heating/cooling system, and will integrate a number of on-site drainage elements to make the building net-zero ready. It will also include electrical rough-ins and underground electrical conduits for a future ground-mounted solar array.
Maxim Construction, based out of Dartmouth, NS, is the successful proponent on this project. The Town is thrilled to be working with a general contractor that employs local Salisbury residents who are overseeing this project. With a number of local sub-contractors from the region and the Lead Architect also being a Town of Salisbury resident, this project has an important community connection in addition to fulfilling a long-awaited need for the Town’s volunteer fire department and it’s members that ensures our Town can not only support our current Department, but have space for the Department as our community continues to grow.
Since work began this summer, site preparation, geothermal wells, domestic well, sanitary sewer connection, building footings, and additional site preparation/civil work have been the primary tasks completed. Work in the coming weeks will become increasingly noticeable as the Contractor completes the ICF forms for the first floor elevation and pours both this concrete and the slab. Additional site work, such as grading, in addition to electrical and plumbing rough-ins are being completed in the meantime.
The Town appreciates the patience and understanding of residents throughout construction and encourages community members to stay updated on the project’s progress by visiting the Town’s webpage at https://salisburynb.ca/new-fire-hall/.
