On June 18, the Town of Salisbury was advised that the Government of New Brunswick has issued Highway Use Permits (HUP) for regulated street access for all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) on certain Provincial streets only within the Town. This takes effect immediately.
Street access is only permitted on Fredericton Road (Route 112) from the entrance to the regulated trail/drop-off area South to Main Street, Main Street (Route 106) from Fredericton Road to civic address 3160 Main Street (Pizza Mill) and River Road from Main Street (Route 106) to 2667 River Road (Wrights Bakery). The intent of these locations is to permit access from the regulated trail to local businesses in Salisbury for amenities. A map is available online HERE.
Additional areas requested by the Municipality are not yet approved. Unless covered by the Highway Use Permit, ATV access on other streets remains prohibited. Last month, the Town was advised by the Province that the primary concern with the latest proposal (re-submitted for consideration in February 2025) is with respect to vehicle speed and counts on Fredericton Road, in particular, the highway overpass. In the coming months, the Town will continue work with the local ATV Club and QuadNB to explore potential additions to the regulated street access. Until such a time, no further access is permitted beyond the HUP permitted areas.
Users must, amongst other requirements of the HUP:
- Follow the requirements of the Off-Road Vehicle Act;
- Wear a helmet, compliant with the standards of the Motor Vehicle Act;
- Operate in the same direction as traffic;
- Not exceed 50 kilometres per hour, or the posted speed limit;
- Travel in single-file, on the extreme right of the road;
- Come to a complete stop prior to crossing and/or entering the approved highways;
- Follow the requirements of the Motor Vehicle Act, including proper signals;
- Be in possession of a valid drivers license;
- Permit other vehicles to have the right of way;
- Be in possession of a valid QuadNB trail permit.
The Town has been working with QuadNB and the local ATV Club for several years to secure road access, and welcomes this permission. The Town looks forward to working with these partners to explore options to increase access in the future.
