During the Committee of the Whole meeting of June 22, 2026, Salisbury Town Council provided direction, at the recommendation of the Salisbury Community Days Committee, on Community Days programming. As of this year, the annual parade will no longer be a part of the Community Days programming.
This decision was based primarily on declining participation by parade entrants and the increasing challenges associated with organizing a parade with limited advance registrations (and attendees). In the last few years, only a handful of parade registrants would commit their entry ahead of time. In fact, some of these returning registrants have already confirmed to the Town that they would have been unable to participate in this year’s parade. In recent years, the Town has also facilitated and assisted with a business-led Christmas Parade which sees significantly more interest from businesses and volunteer organizations, mostly due to the time of year.
This makes the logistics and planning for a parade difficult in the grand scheme of an evolving municipal event calendar that the Town now offers through the full calendar year. Over the past several years, the Town’s annual calendar of events has expanded considerably, providing opportunities for residents to gather and participate throughout the year. Compared to only a few years ago, the Town now offers an annual Harvest Fest, block parties throughout the Summer, increased pool programming and hours, Summer camps (both free and paid), and more. This increasing calendar of events enables the Town to regularly assess the participation and return of the events. As participation patterns change, the Town regularly reviews its programming to ensure events continue to reflect community interests and make effective use of available resources. As part of this regular evolution of events, it was determined that the Community Days programming can evolve without the parade, given the programming and activities are about more than just this one part of the former Community Days programming.
We understand that the history of Community Days and its long-standing traditions have created sentimental value. For some, this will be a difficult decision. We know that Community Days will continue to bring people together through existing and enhanced programming. All of this information was considered and deliberated by Town Council prior to making the decision, at the recommendation of the Community Days Committee.
This year, family-oriented activities traditionally associated with the post-parade gathering will instead take place at Highland Park. In addition to familiar favourites such as food vendors, the market and inflatables, new attractions including bubble walkers, afternoon live music, and a foam pit will be added. Evening programming, including the Beer Garden and live entertainment, will continue as it has through other evolutions of Community Days programming that have taken place in recent years.
Community Days remains an important annual celebration, and the Town looks forward to welcoming residents and visitors for another successful event. The full schedule of activities will be released in the coming weeks.
